At a certain point in their career, every developer faces a choice:
stay in a technical role or move toward leadership.
With the rise of AI, this decision is becoming more complex.
Technical roles - especially at the mid-level - are increasingly vulnerable. AI can already write code, test, refactor.
Leadership roles are less affected by automation - but they’re changing too.
More and more leaders are managing virtual technical teams, where tasks are handled by AI agents.
This shift demands deep technical knowledge: understanding architectures, limitations, and ethical implications of AI systems.
But here’s the question I keep asking myself:
Can we still call this LEADERSHIP?
If communication is predictable, performance is stable, and emotional dynamics are gone -
does leadership become a matter of orchestration rather than empathy?
And if so, could a highly technical individual - a “nerd” - be better suited to lead these AI-driven teams?
I’m still searching for the answer.
What do you think?
What skills will define leadership in the age of hybrid teams?
Will human-centered leadership remain relevant - or evolve into something entirely new?
Let’s talk.
