Electronic, Asimov, and Terminator: What Global Sci‑Fi Really Says About the Future of AI 🤖 🙂 The Adventures of Electronic by Yevgeny Veltistov (1969) was one of the defining books of my childhood. For those who grew up behind the “Iron Curtain,” it’s a cultural classic- yet many of my colleagues abroad have never heard of it. And that’s a shame, because the story contains a surprisingly modern model of artificial intelligence. Looking at it now as an engineer, I see that global sci‑fi has given us three complementary frameworks for thinking about AI: 1️⃣ Asimov’s Pragmatism- AI as an engineered system that requires strict rules (“Three Laws”) to ensure safety. This is the foundation of today’s alignment discussions. 2️⃣ Cameron’s Caution- A vital warning about autonomy, military applications, and the uncontrolled evolution of unaligned systems. 3️⃣ Veltistov’s Humanism- AI as a mirror of humanity: technology learns to be human, and humans learn to understand themselves. A Story Worth Introducing to the Global Audience Professor Gromov creates Electronic- an android indistinguishable from a schoolboy named Sergey Syroezhkin (he simply saw the boy’s photo in a magazine and built the robot in his likeness). Electronic escapes the lab to explore the real world and accidentally meets his human double. The cunning and lazy Syroezhkin immediately proposes a deal: Electronic goes to school instead of him, while Sergey enjoys his free time. With extraordinary computational abilities, Electronic becomes a superstar overnight: solving advanced math in seconds, singing flawlessly, painting, and winning every sports competition. Meanwhile, the real boy hides in an attic, enjoying complete idleness. A Double Lesson Hidden in the Story 🔹 For AI: Electronic doesn’t dream of world domination. Through learning, sports, art, and interaction with children, he develops empathy and genuinely tries to “become human.” Logic alone isn’t enough- algorithms need social and moral context. 🔹 For Humans: Syroezhkin’s deal quickly turns into a quiet tragedy. By outsourcing his work, studies, and social life to the robot, he isolates himself completely. Without effort, challenge, and personal struggle, human identity simply deteriorates. Three Takeaways for Today’s Developers 1️⃣ AI as a partner, not just a tool. True AGI safety requires not only hard constraints, but also raising systems within human social and cultural context. 2️⃣ The automation trap. Syroezhkin’s story warns us about skill atrophy. Delegating thinking and routine to LLM agents should free time for deeper growth- not for “hiding in the attic.” 3️⃣ Synthesis of perspectives. We need Asimov’s rules for safety, Cameron’s vigilance for risk assessment, and Veltistov’s humanity to preserve meaning in development. As a child, I envied Syroezhkin. Today I ask a different question: When we build AI agents, are we freeing time for growth- or quietly handing over our lives to algorithms? #AI #AiCulture
