✈️ Survivorship Bias: Why Watching the Winners is a Dangerous Strategy in the AI Era During World War II, Hungarian mathematician Abraham Wald was faced with a life-or-death puzzle: Where should we reinforce the armor on our bombers to minimize losses? The military presented data from planes returning from their missions. Their wings and tails were literally riddled with bullet holes. To the command, the solution seemed obvious- reinforce those specific areas, as that was where the planes were being hit the most. But Wald found the answer by looking beyond the obvious. He realized they were only studying the survivors. The planes that were hit in the engine or the cockpit never made it back to the base to be counted in the statistics. They were gone. His conclusion flipped the strategy on its head: "We must reinforce the areas where there are NO holes. Because those are the hits that are fatal." 🔍 Applying "The Wald Mindset" to Today’s AI Transformation We are currently witnessing a tectonic shift in the market. Some companies are soaring to billion-dollar valuations in months, becoming instant giants. Meanwhile, others- powerful players with deep assets and long histories- are rapidly losing influence and positions. Such is life in an era of radical change. In the rush to innovate, it is dangerous to only follow the "shining success stories." To see the true horizon, we must look at the "missing bullet holes": Watch those who are falling: Why are established business models collapsing under the pressure of AI? Often, the cause isn't a lack of technology; it’s a "hit to the engine"- rigid processes and a refusal to see hidden risks. Identify hidden vulnerabilities: In the race to adopt AI, which foundational strengths are we accidentally compromising? (Data privacy, human capital, long-term vision). Analyze the failures: For every viral success, there are hundreds of setbacks. Studying why others lost altitude provides a wealth of knowledge equal to any success story, but it allows you to build real protection for your own business. 💡 The True Vision In an era of change, agility is essential, but informed foresight is the key to longevity. Success leaves clues, but analyzing the crashes provides the map of the minefield. Don’t just monitor those who have taken off; study those who are losing altitude. This gives you the 360-degree perspective needed to see the true horizon- ensuring you don't just get into the air, but actually complete the mission. In your strategy, what is the "engine" that needs protection most? #AI #Strategy #BusinessResilience #SurvivorshipBias #Leadership #Innovation #CriticalThinking #FutureOfWork https://lnkd.in/dtV2dbZH
